Answers to the questions asked in "About Grape Virus Diseases-Types, Diagnosis, Countermeasures-"
Q: Is there a site like a database of viral diseases of grapes?
A: I don't think there is a database or internet site that summarizes the viral diseases of grapes in Japan. On the other hand, overseas, universities and producer groups have set up sites to disclose information on grape virus diseases from their respective perspectives. You can get various information by searching in combination with "grapevine", "virus", and other keywords ("symptoms", "management", etc.) (including many academic papers).
Example)
Q: Some varieties have asymptomatic virus infections. Do you think it is necessary to test for asymptomatic grape varieties?
A: Many viruses are transmitted by insects and spread. In addition, multiple viruses can be infected in a complex manner, which can make the disease more severe. Even if you are asymptomatic, you should test for the major viruses as much as possible. Especially in the case of fruit trees, it is important to plant healthy seedlings. It can be said that virus testing is of great significance when importing seedlings and during the production process of seedlings.
Q: If I find a vine that has been confirmed to have a virus in a plot, do I need to root out all of that plot?
A: If the virus has already occurred in Japan, I don't think it is necessary to take measures until all the viruses are cut down and rooted. The impact on productivity and economy depends on the combination of variety and virus, and complex infection with other viruses. Whether to cut down or root out, can we continue to produce wines that are convincing with the virus-affected trees? Is it economically viable? I think it is necessary to make a judgment from this perspective.
However, if a pathogen that is wary of invasion into the country is found, logging and rooting may be ordered by measures in accordance with the Plant Protection Law.
